Here’s a single panel piece combining tangible watercolors with text. I love to explore the potential and interaction of both kinds of media operating in the same space, and see this as an illustrated prose poem. It’s been accepted for print appearance in the Spring 2021 issue of THE NEW PLAINS REVIEW, running since 1986 through the University of Central Oklahoma.

This one was accepted by the PENN REVIEW, the literary journal of the University of Pennsylvania that has been in existence (in one guise or another) since the 1950’s and has published writing by such notables as e.e. cummings, William Carlos Williams, and Allen Ginsberg. They published their 50th issue last year, and I feel honored that the piece made it through their demanding “tiered process” review, since they have a 1% acceptance rate.

This one was accepted by THIN AIR MAGAZINE out of the University of Northern Arizona. When the editors of THE ATHENA REVIEW accepted this piece for their Valentine’s Day issue, they also asked for a caption. So I looked at the piece, closed my eyes, and heard:

Elise and Billie knew there were at least as many ways to keep their romance alive as muscles in the human body.”

The cover image of my instrumental music album I also submitted to The CLIMAX (2020 Volume 2) a journal produced by From Whispers to Roars, an vibrant independent arts and literature organization out of Denver, Colorado. It won the art category prize for this edition, and the editors also made a great decision pairing it with a compelling story by Jody Mason entitled “Crumble to the Sea”—that synergy thing, again.

Highly recommended and available on Amazon.

The editors also asked for an artist statement and this is what I hear:

She has always sensed that another, stronger self resides inside her. As that one now kicks her way free from all the darkness and rises graceful and fluid into the light, she sees everything much more clearly.

This and the following image were my first international publications—accepted and distributed by the adventurous editors at Nunum magazine in New Brunswick, Canada.
